At times, the chaos in Rome can be too much to handle. There are many escapes that you can do for a day, or even for weekends. I would recommend as a first choice the small Umbrian town of Spoleto. Day Trips; Bracciano. Set in rolling hills next to a large lake, (Lago Bracciano), Bracciano contains a splendid castle (guided tours compulsory) Tivoli and Villa Adriana. Tivoli is famed for its gardens, and Hadrian's villa is a nice trip for half a day. Together they make a good day out. Orvieto, a small hillside town north of Rome, easy access with train line. Florence. this needs no introduction. A day trip is rushing it a bit, but if you just come for a day, you will make sure you come back. Weekend Trips; Spoleto, a beautiful hillside medaeval town in Umbria. Assisi, another beautiful hillside town in Umbria, famed for its Basilica. If you go by car, stop off at Deruta, famed for its painted pottery Sorrento. This is a charming town unfortunately rather full of tourists. However, it is a good base for exploring Pompei, Herculaneum, and Capri.
