Travel to Rome

The main ways of getting to Rome are from the two airports that serve Rome. Fiumincino (actually spelt Fiumicino - 1 "n") is the main international airport where most of the international flights arrive. From Fiumincino, there is an "airport" train that will take you to Roma Termini the main train station. Tickets cost around 10 Euro, and there are at least two trains every hour. The other airport Ciampino handles most of the charter flights along with the budget airlines. It is not so easy to get to the centre from here. You must take a bus to the final metro stop Anagnina, and then take the metro into the centre. Some of the airlines however arrange a special bus service. You should ask onboard if this is a possibility.

There are a number of cheap airlines giving cheap flights to Rome.

Travelling in and around Rome

To travel in Rome can be a frustrating and unpleasant experience. The subway is usually overcrowded with a very high risk of pick-pocketers. The buses are also often overcrowded and sometimes crawl along at an unbearable pace during the rush hour. Some Rome busses travel quicker as they are "express" and stop less frequently. To use these modes of public transport, your need to go to a "tabacchi" and buy a ticket (biglietto). You must stamp the ticket on the bus when you travel. you may transfer the ticket to another bus but you should stamp it again. You are allowed to travel on the last bus up to 75 minutes after the last stamp. You may only travel in one direction on the metro. You cannot buy your ticket on the bus or train.

Most of the interesting parts of Rome are in the centre, and most is managable by foot. So I would use public transport to travel to the centre, but once you are there, you can just wander and explore the city centre by foot.
